What Is A Compound Crossbow?

Whether you enjoy shooting for fun or for sport, you may know about the differences between a crossbow and a hunting rifle.  The difference between a compound crossbow and a regular bow is just as large as the difference between a bolt-action hunting rifle and a muzzle-loading rifle. What's In A Name Compound Crossbow

The term compound crossbow derives from the compounding action of pulleys on the bow.  Just like pulleys make it easier to move a heavy box around, so too do they make it easier to pull back the taut drawstring of a bow or crossbow to fire the bolt.

Manual Vs. Automatic Compound Crossbows

Some people prefer to drive an automobile with an automatic transmission because they would rather not have to deal with up-shifting and down-shifting as they drive.  Likewise, many drivers prefer a manual transmission because it gives them more control over a vehicle and they find it a more enjoyable ride.  A crossbow is no different.

Power And Performance in Compound Crossbows

It may seem that what a compound crossbow gives the user in ease, it sacrifices in power, since it seems easier for the hunter to pull back and thus must not be as capable of firing far.  The reality of the weapon, however, is that a crossbow's firing ability (known as its power stroke) is only dependent on the distance that it is propelled.

Compound Crossbow Releasing The Shaft

By far the largest difference that a hunter will immediately notice when they use a compound crossbow is that the weapon vibrates much more when you fire a bolt.  Since there is more energy in a compound crossbow than in a basic crossbow, that energy is released in a shot and only a little bit is transferred to the bolt itself.

Accuracy in a compound crossbow

Despite the vibration of the shot, a compound crossbow is much more accurate than a simple bow.  This is because it has a longer anchor shot, so that the bolt has a more fixed firing path, and because the extra power keeps it from diverting from that path once it is affected by gravity and air.
